Imagine ascending a frozen waterfall, swinging an ice tool into a bulge of blue ice, then placing your ice crampon onto a delicate shelf in a curtain of chandelier ice...
For beginners: ice climbing is a unique and fun experience with an Aspen Expeditions guide; using technical ice tools and crampons to climb frozen waterfalls on a safe top-rope can be a real thrill! Minutes from downtown Aspen, along the Rio Grande Trail, is an ideal area for the first time ice climber. We will introduce you to two-tool ice climbing techniques. You will spend the day gaining a basic understanding of safety measures, tool placement, body positioning, belaying, and proper lowering techniques.
For the more experienced climber: consider a guided day of ice climbing in Redstone. Deep in the heart of the Rockies, the small Victorian town of Redstone, Colorado lies beneath soaring sandstone cliffs. Ample snowfall and year-round waterfalls that freeze solid from November through March make the hamlet an ice and mixed climber's get away with abundant routes. From WI 2 to WI 5, and M2 to M10, rim to canyon, most have easy access and are just minutes from the car.
Classic Routes of Redstone include Avacado Gully - WI 3+ M3, Redstone Pillar - WI 3+, Marble Falls - WI 4, The Drool - WI5, and the long and rambling Dancing in the Moonlight - WI3. We also guide moderate to steep ice curtains in Rifle, CO.
Our AMGA trained/certified mountain guides are experience alpinists that guide both ice and mixed-ice climbing routes; please contact us via phone at 970-925-7625 or email/form to determine the best date for you or to request more information.

For many resort skiers and snowboarders, there is something decidedly romantic, wild west and even risque, perhaps, about riding a chairlift up the ski area, then exiting the ski area and skiing down untracked chutes and bowls - potentially as far down as the valley floor.
The mountains of the Elk Range and the access provided by our local ski areas - Aspen Mt., Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk - combine to make Aspen/Snowmass an incredible destination for backcountry skiers. From the top of a lift, a short hike (or just a traverse, in some cases) opens up infinite options for hand-crafted backcountry skiing tours.
Depending on snow conditions and specific clients' ambitions/abilities, our AMGA-certified guides will tailor a memorable, one-of-a-kind untracked adventure just for you and your group.

This mountaineering experience takes you into the heart of central Colorado's Elk Range. You'll camp at Capitol Lake and enjoy first class mountain scenery underneath Capitol's northwest face, saddling up early for your summit day the next morning. This world-class climb has earned the reputation as one of the most difficult 14,000' peaks in Colorado, largely due to its' famously exposed 'knife-edge' ridge. The Day - Meet your guide at your pre-determined location and head to the Capitol Lake trailhead parking lot. Begin the hike in to Capitol Lake with heavy packs, approximately 6.5 miles. There are great campsites and the lake is very scenic. The next day is your summit day. You will begin the approach well before dawn. You will begin up a well-beaten, steep trail for 0.5 miles up to the 12,500-foot saddle between Capitol and 13,300-foot Mount Daly. From the saddle, you will make a descending traverse south into the basin. You will then make your way west through the boulder field to the notorious K2 - the view from Capitol here is breathtaking. You will then continue climbing to the unmistakable "knife-edge." The knife-edge is a 100-foot-long, horizontal stretch of ridge. The best technique to cross this section is to grab the edge with your hands and walk your feet along underneath you - the rock is surprisingly solid, compared to the rest of the climb. You will continue the ascend towards the summit. (Water, lunch/snacks are not included).

Castle Peak (14,279 ft.) is the highest summit of the Elk Mountains, ninth highest in the Rocky Mountains. Castle is one of our "lighter duty" 14ers, typically done as a non-technical climb. Despite being the highest peak in the Elk Mountains, it can be a relatively moderate climb and therefore is an excellent intro 14er.
Castle Peak takes its name from the castle-like features on its southern ridge. The best climbing months are June, July, August, September through the Montezuma Glacier, a permanent snowfield between Castle and Conundrum Peaks. There are two standard routes for ascent. The Northwest Ridge features a moderate snow climb followed by an easy ridge scramble. It should not be attempted late in the summer when the 200 feet (60 m) of loose dirt and scree meet the climber near the top of the Castle-Conundrum saddle. The Northeast Ridge features an easy snow climb, but slightly harder scrambling and route-finding once on the ridge. This is a perfect 1st 14ner for people who are after a bit more than a walk up.
Conundrum Peak is a northern sub-summit of Castle Peak with elevation of 14,040 it is often climbed in conjunction with Castle Peak. In late May through June Castle can also be an excellent intro snow climb. The approach to these climbs either requires a long hike on the road or a 4x4 vehicle approach, which makes it very reasonable.
Our AMGA trained and certified mountain guides will tailor a memorable, one-of-a-kind climbing adventure just for you!
