Aspen Haute Route

Join us April 15 - 19 for a classic Aspen ski touring experience.  The "Aspen Haute Route"  Or the "Star Peak Traverse"  is without a doubt one of the most impressive hut to hut traverses in Colorado, linking the Opa and Friends hut in a circuit from the historical town of Ashcroft.  On this tour we ski through three high mountain passes off the shoulders of Star and Taylor Peak.

April is a fantastic time for ski touring the high alpine in Colorado with typically stable snow conditions and the possibility of ski mountaineering conditions and / or pure powder.  On this tour you will develop skills that will help for a classic european haute traverse whether it is general navigation and mountain travel on skis, avalanche assessment, or use of crampons and ice axe for steeper climbing and skiing.  Our guides will educate you and show you a great time a long the way.

Prices start at $1500/pp all included. Please contact us via phone at 970-925-7625 or email/form to determine the best date for you or to request more information.

Day 1 - Meet at our shop at Aspen Highlands for gear check and finalize the food packing / distribution. Relocate to Ashcroft and skin out Express Creek up over Little Italian pass and ski descend to the remote Opa Hut in the upper Taylor Basin.  There is potential for evening ski tour depending on timing / motivation or snacks and dinner prepared by our guides.

Day 2 - Early morning breakfast and ski tour from the Opa Hut.  Options include steep skiing in the M and M chutes over Little Italian pass, lines of different aspects off of Taylor Peak and potential for a big tour on the north face of Star Peak.  Afterwards we return to the hut and have snacks and dinner.

Day 3 - We have an early morning breakfast, pack our kits up and descend down into Taylor Creek.  We follow Taylor creek SW and climb up and through Star Pass between Star Peak and the beautiful Crystal Peak.  From this point we have many options for a ski descent into upper brush creek and the Friends Hut.  Once established at the hut there is potential for an evening ski tour or relaxation.

Day 4- Today we have the option to venture on the the south face of Star Peak and various arms which create the "star".  The "June Coulior "  Is a supper classic line up and down the middle of the face which is on many ski mountaineers bucket list.

Day 5 - Early morning breakfast and pack up.  We climb NW up and over Pearl Pass and ski descend into upper Castle Creek drainage.  On this descent we pass under the impressive east face of Castle Peak, the highest 14er in the Elks and we ski pass the Tagert and Green Wilson huts on our descent out to Ashcroft.  Its a great decision to stop along the way at the Pine Creek Cookhouse for lunch or at least a celebratory beer after completing such a fantastic tour!
