At 9300' the town of Silverton sits high in the San Juan Mountains. US 550 cuts through Red Mountain Pass from the north and through Molas and Coal Bank Pass to the South. Two other roads leave the town of Silverton and dead end in the mountains - at the Climax Mine and the old mining site of Eureka. Needless to say, with its high elevation, remote location and unique roadway access to the mountains, Silverton has some of the best ski touring in Colorado.
